A remarkably good condition early Huntley and Palmer biscuit tin.
The one is called The Library and dates from 1900.
The tin in the shape of eight bound books with travelling strap. Books include 'History of Reading', 'Biscuits', 'Poetry', 'Essay', 'Travels', 'Science', 'Cakes' and 'Modern Reading'. Two of the columes have Huntley & Palmers on base of spine.
The idea of making containers to look like books was not a new one. The British Museum has a portable bookcase or travelling library library of 1619-1625 in the shape of a folio volume, with shelf-space inside to hold 44 (real) books. 50,000 copies of this tin are known to have been produced in 1900.
There is some discolouration of the top and rear but generally in a very clean condition considering its 110 years old!.
